Tailings was my first investigative documentary, and my introduction to the harmful effects of uranium mining. While this film only looks at one tailings pile and its surrounding community, it's important to note that there are over 50 tailings piles in the United States today, and only one of them has a viable cleanup plan. Since the film was finished, the price tag of moving the Homestake tailings pile and cleaning up the contamination has been estimated at around a billion dollars.
