Sechs „atomare“ Filme aus Australien, Brasilien, Dänemark, Italien, Spanien und der Schweiz wurden beim 6. Internationalen Uranium Film Festival in Rio de Janeiro mit der Trophäe des Uranium Film Festivals ausgezeichnet.
DIE URANIUM FILM FESTIVAL PREISTRÄGER 2016
Rio de Janeiro / 1. JUNI 2016 - Das sechste Internationale Uranium Film Festival von Rio de Janeiro hat sechs „atomare“ Filme aus Australien, Brasilien, Dänemark, Italien, Spanien und der Schweiz mit seiner Trophäe, dem „Yellow Einstein“ ausgezeichnet. Weitere vier Filme aus Deutschland, Italien, Spanien und den Niederlanden bekamen eine besondere Anerkennung.
Insgesamt zeigte das Festival in der Cinematheque von Rio de Janeiros Museum für Moderne Kunst (MAM Rio) 49 Filme über Atomkraft, Uran, nukleare Sicherheit und radioaktiven Risiken. 13 Regisseure, Filmemacher und Produzenten waren in Rio mit dabei. Die besten und wichtigsten Filme wurden durch die internationale Jury des Festivals ausgezeichnet.
"Seit Anbeginn der Zeit ist Natur und Menschheit radioaktiver Strahlung ausgesetzt. Es gibt natürliche Strahlung, die aus dem Weltraum sowie aus dem Boden unter unseren Füßen kommt. Seit der Entdeckung und Nutzung des Urans sind wir allerdings seit mehr als 100 Jahren zusätzlich der „künstlichen“ Strahlung beispielsweise durch Uranbergbau und durch mehr als 2000 Atombomben, die von den fünf „Atom-Mächten“ USA, Russland, Frankreich, Großbritannien und China sowie von Indien und Pakistan in der Atmosphäre gezündet wurden“, sagt Festivaldirektor Norbert G. Suchanek.
Radioaktivität ist unsichtbar und hat weder Geschmack noch Geruch. Suchanek: “Es ist eine große Herausforderung, etwas zu filmen, das man nicht sehen kann, das uns aber gleichzeitig schädigen und sogar töten kann. Das Uranium Film Festival hat es sich deshalb zur Pflicht gemacht, diesen Filmemacher, die sich dieser schweren, aber gleichzeitig auch wichtigen und risikoreichen Aufgabe stellen, zu ehren und ihren Filmen eine internationale Plattform zu geben.“
Die Trophäe des Uranium Film Festivals ist ein Kunstwerk des brasilianischen Abfall-Material-Künstlers Getúlio Damado, der im berühmten Künstlerviertel Santa Teresa von Rio de Janeiro lebt arbeitet und wo auch das erste internationale Uranium Film Festival im Mai 2011 stattfand. Die Trophäe kreiert Getúlio aus dem Müll, den er in den Straßen von Santa Teresa sammelt. Dazu verwendet er auch alte, zerbrochene Uhren zur Erinnerung and die erste Atombombe, die Hiroshima vernichtete. Als die Atom-Bombe am 6. August 1945 über dem Stadtzentrum Hiroshimas explodierte, blieben alle Uhren in der Stadt genau um 8:15 Uhr stehen.
"In den vergangenen sechs Jahren trug unsere Auszeichnung den Spitznamen Yellow Oscar. Doch Anfang 2016 hat nun offensichtlich auch die berühmte Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood unser Festival entdeckt und uns die Verwendung des Namens Oscar untersagt. Deshalb haben wir einen neuen Namen für unsere Trophäe gesucht und gefunden, der vielleicht sogar noch besser passt. Unser Preis heisst jetzt Yellow Einstein,“ erklärt Festivaldirektor Norbert G. The film-installation elaborates on the cleaning of the landscape, people who clean the landscape and the landscape itself. Landscape conceived as a space, both natural and cultivated, dynamic and cultural, an environment in which we “stay”, move, develop and exist, where social- and power relations play an important role. Landscape as a reflection, as a form of exchange and identification. How do we relate to this traumatized landscape? The evacuees are not only confronted with loss of their native soil, there is also the problem of no return because of nuclear radiation. These effects are much more severe, if not unsolvable. Both areas, hit by the tsunami and the devastated Daiichi power plant, has to be cleaned. The interviews deal with the persons who clean these areas, voluntary or paid, his motivation and his traumatic relationship with the affected and ruined landscape. The Japanese cultivated landscape has a centuries-old tradition and a special relationship with its residents. Old Japanese gardens are slowly overgrown by new nature. Meanwhile residents will be given permission to return to the ‘clean’ landscape.

He speaks to DW about exploring radiation-contaminated zones, and how the cleanup has progressed so far.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
About one year before the Fukushima reactor exploded, the International Uranium Film Festival (IUFF) was founded in 2010 in Santa Teresa, the famous artist quarter in the heart of Rio de Janeiro. It is the first festival of its kind that addresses all nuclear and radioactive issues. The aim is to inform about nuclear power, uranium mining, nuclear weapons and the risks of radioactivity. Independent documentaries and movies are the best tool to bring that information to a diverse international public. And a festival is the best way to bring the films to the people! The horror of atomic bombs and those who suffered from them, and nuclear accidents like Three Mile Island and Chernobyl should never be forgotten - nor repeated. Then the nuclear accident in Fukushima happened just two months before the first edition of the International Uranium Film Festival in May 2011 in Rio de Janeiro.
Uranium mining, fracking, nuclear accidents, atomic bomb factories, nuclear waste: No matter if you are in favour or against the use of nuclear power, all people should be informed about the risks. The International Uranium Film Festivals creates a neutral space to throw light on all nuclear issues. It stimulates new productions, supports "nuclear" filmmaking and the discussion about the nuclear question in Brazil and worldwide.
